I come from a banking background with a very bad culture of sales pressure all the time. When I left, I met a great leader who is currently my director, and he has groomed me into who I am today. I have such great conviction in the business also because my dad was a beneficiary of life insurance when he suffered from a severe heart attack 3 years ago.
I’ve been in the business for 5 years and most of my clients are in their mid-20s to late 30s. I believe in family planning and getting their finances planned before the next phase in life (i.e. getting married, having a child, pre-retirement etc.) I am a product specialist in my team and I specialise in Wealth Creation and Wealth Preservation. What drives me in the business is when I service my clients and settle claims in a timely manner when the clients require financial assistance the most. It brings me great joy when I know my clients benefit from the planning sessions with me.
Having the correct attitude and mindset.
This is a piece of advice I would give to new financial consultants. In this industry, having the right mindset is by far the most important thing. Whether you think you can or cannot, it will be as such. You should always surround yourself with producers and leaders, and absorb all the wisdom from them. Be teachable always! Lastly, always have a proper system for everything. It will keep you efficient and effective as a financial consultant. My boss, Executive Director Matthew Chew, is the greatest influence that inspires me as a financial consultant and I aspire to be as supportive and to provide such guidance to others as he did for me.
The ever-changing role of financial consultants.
I think the role of financial consultants will change quite drastically with the rise in technology. I don’t think that technology can completely take away the financial consultant’s role as there is no human element there, but we should learn to upgrade ourselves and use technology to complement what we are doing. From filling up paper forms to online forms to remote signing now, the industry has truly transformed a lot.
Moving forward, financial consultants should embrace technology and embrace further changes which will surely come, so that we can be first movers rather than miss out on these opportunities.
Outside of my life as a financial consultant.
I regularly help out in organisations like Club Rainbow and MINDS as I enjoy volunteering my time and giving support to the families of children who suffer chronic illnesses, as well as the intellectually disabled community in Singapore.
