I have been a financial consultant since 2010, dedicating over a decade to mastering the intricacies of financial planning and client service. Before entering the financial advisory field, I worked as a Project Manager in the IT industry. The transition from IT to financial planning was driven by my desire to directly improve the lives of individuals through meticulous financial guidance. This career has not only allowed me to utilise my skills in managing complex projects but also to apply them in managing individuals’ and families’ financial futures.

Several moments stand out as particularly rewarding in my career, one of which was delivering a significant life insurance payout to a widow, which provided her with much-needed security during a challenging time. I also remember supporting a client through her father’s cancer treatment, which not only involved financial planning but also emotional support and guidance. These experiences underscore the profound impact a dedicated financial consultant can have on the lives of clients, providing both financial and emotional support.

Throughout my career, I have been inspired by numerous leaders within AIA and the MDRT team. Their speeches and guidance have profoundly influenced my professional development, enhancing my mindset, attitude, and sales performance. The ongoing learning and adaptation these leaders preach are critical in an ever-evolving industry like ours.

The role of a financial consultant is not static; with advancements in technology, such as AI and fintech, the industry is rapidly changing. Simple financial products like travel insurance are now easily accessible online. To remain relevant, it is crucial for financial consultants to continuously update their knowledge and skills, and provide holistic, value-driven advice to clients that extend beyond basic financial products.

New entrants into the field should understand that this is predominantly a people-oriented business, not just a transactional one. It is vital to engage with a wide variety of individuals, learn about their life stages and challenges, and tailor solutions to meet their specific needs. Building a broad and diverse client base will provide invaluable experience and help develop the skills necessary to succeed in this career.
