I like to think that this career was planned out by the universe. I had a full-time job as a sales representative renting office spaces and equipment but I didn’t like the job scope and left. That was when a friend of mine, who is also a financial consultant, introduced me to this industry. Through him, I met my mentor and boss, Vincent Koh, and began my journey into the financial advisory industry. Being a financial consultant has changed my life forever, especially for someone like me who started from the bottom. There’s no place else I’d rather be.
A life-changing career.
Spending a decade as a leader now, I also feel that my leadership role today was arranged by the universe. I have always been encouraged by my mentor to explore recruitment and move up the management ladder. I took this advice with a pinch of salt as I had always enjoyed the producer’s path which was more free and easy. This changed after having my first child and being presented with another opportunity to be a leader, and this has changed my career for the better.
Plan for others how you would plan for yourself.
I usually do holistic financial planning for my clients as they are of the same age group as me. This makes my service relatable as I can plan for them similarly to what I had planned for myself, as more likely than not, my clients and I are in similar life stages. With my extensive experience in the industry, I’m also better able to recommend strategies that would be more suited to their various budgets.
Accountability is a team effort.
As a leader, I always train my associates to be accountable to themselves and their clients. Ultimately, I wish to build a team deeply rooted in morals and cohesive as a team. It will take more than sheer effort, but I will do whatever it takes to get there.
