As a financial consultant for 5 years before being promoted to a leader for 9 years now, I have found this career to be more than just financially rewarding. My greatest motivation is being to help my clients build their wealth and protect their assets in times of crisis, and this career has also helped build my inner strength and character alongside honing my skills as an entrepreneur.

I enjoy building people, and I realise that by building a team, not only can I groom success in people, together as a team, we can impact more lives through financial planning as well. Seeing someone grow from a nobody to a somebody brings me immense satisfaction, knowing that I have played a part in their growth. That motivates me as a leader.

Never rest on your laurels.
Since becoming a leader, I make it a point to not only focus on just team management. I continue to provide financial advice to our clients still, as a way of keeping ourselves relevant and maintaining our level of competence.

Find like-minded individuals to succeed.
Not everyone can be self-motivated for various reasons. In this industry, it is important that you find, and work with, motivated financial consultants. I remember having a conversation with a budding financial consultant once, and many months later, she thanked me for that conversation as it saved her career and is now a successful consultant in her own right. Seeing the lives of the people you coach become better is a testament to your leadership.

Stay adaptable and never forget your role.
During the pandemic, the level of physical interactions I could have with my financial consultants was very restricted. We were all working remotely, and I was hence unable to do proper pulse checks on the ground. The biggest lesson I learned is to actively engage with them daily, so as to keep their mind and emotions in check.
