Five years ago, I started out in the financial advisory industry as a student advisor while pursuing my engineering degree at the National University of Singapore. I graduated in 2017 and entered the industry full-time when I achieved my first International Dragon Award (“IDA”) – Bronze Dragon Award 2019 and again in 2020 (2021 and MDRT 2021) I was also part of Singapore’s first 100 IDA team in history to achieve the 100 IDA Team Award 2019. On top of that, I am a member of the AIA Financial Advisers Prestige Platinum Club 2020.
Be passionate about what you are doing.
I realised how passionate I was about being in this industry because I would always be sharing my experiences and knowledge with my friends and family. Financial planning is so important, and it is hard to hold back when educating and bettering society is one of the main facets of your career.
Find people you can look up to.
My brother, Seng Yong, is also in this industry. I have seen him grow and help people around him throughout his career, and I consider him my biggest role model. By learning from him, I get an insight into whether I am doing things correctly, and whether I am on the right track to becoming the sincerest financial consultant I can be.
Always think holistically.
Being a financial consultant is not only about selling insurance. It is about holistic financial planning, including both short and long-term goals. I believe that my role entails providing advice about everything from Central Provident Fund to credit cards, investments and housing loans. So as a financial consultant, you must always ask yourself what else can you value add to your clients besides insurance and related products.
