Having spent almost 3 years in an Australian start-up, I was lucky enough to put what I’ve learnt in my years of education to good use. But somehow, I knew that I wanted more in life. Thankfully, a good friend approached me to start my first savings plan back in 2016 and decided to take me on this journey with him. Today, I’m proud to say that I’m able to share the same belief that I was first introduced to with all my family and friends, which is to make the life of my fellow men better.

Connecting with people from all walks of life.
Being able to connect with people from all walks of life is something that I’ll never take for granted. I’m thankful for the trust that my clients have in me, and I’m also forever grateful for the life experiences they’ve shared with me. I’ve learnt to value life more and appreciate all the good things I’ve been presented with over the years.

A relationship bonded through time and understanding.
While the industry faces competition, especially from the fintech sector, I strongly believe that most consumers still want and prefer a relationship bonded through time and understanding. This human touch is something that can never be replaced, at least not at this point.

Do not underestimate the power of having a network.
Insurance is not something that’s easily brought up over a dinner conversation. As such, it can be tough for people to understand how this industry works. COVID-19 has also led to a situation where meeting new people has become a challenge. So if we cannot expand the circle of our network fast enough, we will end up becoming stagnant. That is why the ability to build a strong network is crucial to succeeding as a financial consultant. The power of someone’s network also determines the ability of his or her emotional quotient (EQ) and social quotient (SQ).

Be more than a financial consultant.
I take pride in being a “one-stop centre” for my clients. I offer more than my job of selling insurance — I’m building and maintaining a relationship. This can range from driving my clients somewhere or helping them change new notes for Chinese New Year, to even teaching them how to shop from Taobao. If it’s within my means, I will always go the extra mile for them.
