Funnily enough, my current leader is someone I did freelance graphic design for. After a few months of working together, we eventually became good friends and she asked me to consider financial consulting as a career as she felt that it suited my character and ambitions. I decided to give this career a shot, and after a few months of shadowing and learning the scope of a financial consultant, I fell in love with the job and realised this was the perfect avenue for me to help others realise that managing our finances is more than simply trying to earn more money.
This is something I hold dear to me due to my personal experience from being in an “elite” school where so much emphasis was placed on the mindset that success in life simply meant earning a lot of money. I never subscribed to that and was constantly made to feel like I’m not worthy, even by the teachers. But I’m glad as it shaped me to be who I am today with the values that I have. Now, I strive to do my best in this career to provide holistic financial planning for my clients beyond them simply earning more money.
A career of continuous growth
Being a financial consultant always challenges me to push myself out of my comfort zone and to constantly seek growth which I love. Most importantly, I’m constantly reminded of the amazing friendships that I have built. I learn something from everyone I meet, whether or not they eventually become my client.
The importance of the personal touch
I strongly believe that succeeding in this business requires one to value relationships and the ‘people’ connection, as financial consulting is a people’s business after all. We have to be sincere and strive to deliver value beyond simply recommending the right products, as it is part of our job to also foster strong relationships and build trust.
Join with your hearts in the right place
It’s challenging to find people to join financial advisory with their hearts in the right place. Most recruitment strategies involve some form of money or material rewards, but I hope this will not end up attracting only people who want to join financial consulting for these material reasons. Personally, I want to build a team that is driven by factors more than money and is passionate about the right things.
