Upon graduation from NTU Business, I was a Human Resource and Information System Consultant for 2 years. What got me curious about the financial advisory industry, and particularly AAG, was when I witnessed the personal growth my friends experienced in the company. After meeting and getting to know my leaders, I was drawn to the mindset and heart they have for the people around them. I saw them as mentors and told myself that I would be happy if I could just emulate 70% to 80% of who they are. I decided to follow in their footsteps and take the leap of faith into the industry. I also have a strong conviction towards the importance of protecting oneself, and strongly believe in financial planning regardless of age.
Find role models to be the person you want to be.
I have my leader to thank for being my greatest inspiration as a financial consultant. He led the way in showing me what mental resilience, grit, lifelong learning and pride in one’s work look like. I learnt how being a financial consultant is not about selling products; rather, it’s about being a friend who professionally prescribes solutions after analysing every person’s unique situation.
Be a human first.
In a people-centric business like financial advisory, it’s important to be human first. As they say in Chinese — 先做人，后做事。Anyone can sell you products but not everyone will be willing to sit down with you and be a friend and walk through your concerns and finances. The real game begins after the actual sale. Hence, it is important to be with someone you trust and feel comfortable approaching.
Stay grounded and humble.
Financial consultants, regardless of seniority in the business, should always stay grounded and humble even after achieving certain milestones. We have to constantly remind ourselves that the signing of a contract is a promise, and that the money we are handling is our clients’ hard-earned money. Throughout this roller coaster ride through life, we have to know our identity and the reason why we decided to join the business. It is important to know that we are in a people’s business, and we should take pride in our work, and be proud of what we do. We are in a business where we educate and make the lives of other individuals better.
