TAN YONG XUN

I was an economics student at Nanyang Technological University when I chanced upon the AAG internship programme. That was where I bumped into my mentor, John Seah, by chance and my life has never been the same ever since.

I began my journey in the financial advisory industry as an intern, and then as a student advisor, before going full-time when I graduated in July 2020.

Find a role model to chart your path.

My greatest inspiration is my mentor, John Seah. I always looked at him and thought to myself that if I were to become exactly like him 5, 7, or 10 years down the road, would I be happy? The answer was always more than happy. I wanted to speak the way he does, the way he portrays himself and the way he cares for others. He reminds me of my dad, who’s also the biggest inspiration of my life. – Find that role model in your life and you will see that it’s not always about the monetary achievements you’ll chase after, but personal achievement, growth, and the ability to give willingly and lovingly.

There is no one-size-fits-all plan.

With my background as an economics student, I’m able to see the industry from a macro perspective, and my knowledge and ability in that has allowed me to provide different perspectives to my clients too. There is never a one-size-fits-all plan, and I always relate to my clients my experiences as a millennial and young fresh graduate stepping into adulthood. I also relate to my clients what I learnt from older folks, based on my interactions with my uncles, aunties and closest friends’ parents.

Listen with your heart.

We’re in a people’s business, and if we’re genuine in understanding someone’s situation and being empathetic towards them, we’ll be able to enjoy this business. Always converse and listen with our hearts, and always be willing to serve and give. To those who are considering joining the profession, it is simple but not easy. Apart from financial advice, I am also someone my clients would talk to about their problems, which further shows that trust has to be built. This trust would then give my clients peace of mind. At the same time, I feel empowered to be in a position where I can help my clients, providing solutions to their needs which may not be even financial advice.
