I was an accountant for 4 years before I took the leap of confidence to be a financial consultant. Initially, I was driven by my desire to build a better life for myself and my family. But after experiencing what being a financial consultant is like, I realised there’s so much more to the financial advisory industry — the mentorship, abundance culture, and pay-it-forward mentality. Every day, we think about how we can push ourselves to be 1% better, and how to make the lives of the people we meet better off after meeting us. 3 years on, I’m proud to say that there’s no place I’d rather be.

Pay it forward.
I’m thankful for the mentors and seniors who came before us, as they laid the foundations right and took their precious time to mentor us selflessly, painstakingly, and without asking for anything in return. I have experienced first-hand the lack of proper financial planning when my dad suffered a severe heart attack which led him to be in a vegetative state. This landed my family in perpetual hospital debt. This is why I want to put myself out there to share this story wholeheartedly with everyone, to prevent them from walking in my family’s footsteps.

A lifelong journey with your clients.
In this career, I hope to be able to witness and celebrate the different life milestones with my clients, from cradle to grave. As financial consultants, we have to give our hearts, eyes and ears to our clients and treat them as our own friends and family. It’s not going to be an easy journey, but it will be worth it as it’s all about personal development, building emotional maturity and getting a sense of fulfilment from helping others.

An industry with professional and personal development.
To those considering a career in financial advisory, my advice is to be in a place that provides life mentorship with people who are willing to coach you wholeheartedly and push you to be uncomfortable in order to grow far and fast. The future will thank your current discipline, hard work, effort, sweat and tears you put in!
